The Art of Slowing Down: Finding Zen at Heartwoods Bonsai
Imagine walking into a space where the busy world outside simply melts away. You might hear a little voice in your head saying you just want to buy a tiny tree for your living room window. But the moment you step into Heartwoods Bonsai and Zen Arts in Seattle, you realize you are in for an entirely different experience. Maria Walton and her small, dedicated team of two have built a true sanctuary. They offer a beautiful combination of landscaping, fine art, and deep education.
If a customer leaves a five star review, Maria hopes they mention one specific thing: Heartwoods does not just sell plants, they educate. Her goal is to help you realize that bringing a bonsai home is about connecting with nature, not merely owning a piece of it. When you walk through their doors, you are stepping into a vibrant classroom where nature is the ultimate teacher.
A Midwestern Heart in the Evergreen State
Maria has called Washington home for twenty nine years, but her story actually begins in the deciduous forests of the American Midwest. Growing up surrounded by those changing leaves deeply informed her worldview and her unique design aesthetic. Her personal journey into the miniature arboreal world began in 2015 when she received a Corkbark Chinese Elm as a gift. It was originally purchased from John Muth, a beloved figure in the local tree community.
That single plant sparked a magnificent passion. Maria soon became deeply involved in the local scene, eventually serving as Vice President of the historic Puget Sound Bonsai Association. With eleven years in the horticulture industry under her belt, she honors the deep heritage of the region while boldly exploring the exciting new frontiers of North American Bonsai.
The Art of Eco Buddhism and Lifelong Learning
Working with Maria feels like taking a masterclass in mindfulness and botany all at once. She brings an incredible academic background to her craft, holding Bachelor degrees in English and Philosophy from Ohio State University, along with a teaching certification from Antioch University in Seattle. She is also a Certified Master Gardener who continues to hone her own skills by studying with Ryan Neil at Bonsai Mirai in Oregon.
Maria considers herself an engaged Eco Buddhist. She has dedicated her life to healing the Earth and helping people reconnect with themselves through her work. She even writes poetry, stories, and essays exploring these beautiful themes! For Maria, shaping a tree is an attempt to approximate the grandeur of the massive masterpieces that sustain our planet.

Maria is an open book and you can tell that she is passionate. Almost every sentence taught me something new. I have kept plants for most of my life and work at a nursery, so learning that much in so little time was insane. She has the best intentions and just wants everyone to be happy, plants and people. This is also the first nursery where I was encouraged to text. I’m used to nurseries telling me to come in so a shop telling me I can stay at home and still get help was so nice. Delightful experience all around, I love sales people that are honest with you.
